Sex Crime Lawyer Serving Ventura County

Sex crimes are some of the most serious crimes that can be charged. They not only carry the potential for severe penalties, including extended prison time; they can also have negative effects on your reputation, your family, and your relationships. Even simply being accused of a sex crime can have an immediate impact on your life. These cases require care, consideration, and discretion. Moreover, the Ventura County District Attorney’s office aggressively prosecutes all sex offenses. Without effective representation, a defendant charged with a sex offense cannot expect any sort of leniency.

If you are charged with a sex crime in California, it is vital that you secure the help of a dedicated, zealous, and compassionate Ventura criminal defense lawyer. Whatever the charge, you have rights. You should not be browbeaten into taking an unfair plea or have your name dragged through the mud in order to coerce you to play ball. You need a strong legal defender in your corner to protect your rights. Ventura sex crime defense attorney Paul Tyler is here to help.

Defending Clients Charged with a Variety of Sex Crimes

There are a number of crimes that fall under the gamut of “sex crimes.” They range in severity from misdemeanors to felonies, although most sex crimes are charged as felonies. The Law Offices of Paul Tyler serves clients who have been charged with any crime, including the following:

  • Lewd or lascivious act
  • Internet pornography
  • Rape
  • Spousal rape
  • Statutory rape
  • Oral copulation with a minor
  • Possession or distribution of child pornography
  • Indecent exposure
  • Prostitution

Sex Offender Registration

Sex crimes carry an array of potential penalties, particularly because the category ranges from misdemeanor to felony. Felony sex crimes are often punishable by extended time in prison. Conviction for the most serious crimes such as rape can lead to a lifetime sentence. The ancillary consequences beyond the typical fines and prison terms, however, are what make sex crimes different from other offenses.

For most sex crimes, convicted offenders are required to register as a sex offender.  Historically, California required all sex offenders to register for life. Beginning in 2021, offenders will only have to register for a period of time depending on the severity of the crime and whether they are a repeat offender. Registrants who comply with the conditions of their conviction will be able to apply for removal from the registry at the end of the appropriate term, depending on the “Tier” of the crime.

Tier 1 registry will require registration for ten years and applies to misdemeanors or felony crimes that are not considered violent or serious. Tier 2 offenders will register for 20 years. Tier 2 applies to specified mid-level felonies that are not violent, including sex acts with people unable to consent or lewd and lascivious acts with a minor. Tier 3 offenders will still register for life. Tier 3 will apply to serious, violent crimes, including rape, child pornography, and kidnapping or violent crimes committed in connection with a sex crime.
